Professor Aki Mikkola is a true visionary and pioneer in the field of machine design, whose remarkable career at LUT University has significantly advanced the reputation and quality of research within the engineering faculty. Since becoming a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2002, he has brought profound expertise and an innovative approach to the role. Since earning his Ph.D. degree in 1997, Mikkola has dedicated his career to conducting groundbreaking research and educating the next generation of engineers. His research group is known for its innovative breakthroughs in the areas of flexible multibody dynamics, rotating structures, and biomechanics.

Professor Mikkola's work has been internationally recognized with five patents and over 150 peer-reviewed publications, in addition to more than a hundred conference presentations. This body of work highlights his commitment to sharing knowledge and advancing his field. His role as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Multibody System Dynamics not only solidifies his position as a leading expert but also promotes the continuation of important scientific dialogue within his specialty.

In addition, Professor Mikkola has received several teaching awards, underscoring his exceptional skills as an educator and mentor. In 2023, he was honored as LUT University Professor of the Year, a testament to his profound impact on academia and engineering practices.
